The Canada Health Infoway (Infoway) Accelerate Challenge was designed to help accelerate digital health use among patients and clinicians in an effort to boost patient care and foster health system improvements through greater use.
Launched in October 2013, the Accelerate Challenge was open to Infoway demonstration projects that successfully met their active user and reporting milestones. It encouraged participants to exceed those targets and continue to recruit new users for their digital health innovations.
In total, eight demonstration projects participated in the Challenge, which ran over a six month period. At its conclusion, the top three projects with the highest user growth were rewarded for their accomplishments:
First Place: $30,000 reward
The Ottawa Hospital – Clinical Mobile App
The Ottawa Hospital Clinical Mobile App allows clinicians to conveniently and securely access vital patient information using mobile devices, which saves time and helps strengthen bedside care.
Second Place: $20,000
Nova Scotia Department of Health and Wellness – Personal Health Records
The Nova Scotia Department of Health and Wellness Personal Health Records portal provides patients with the ability to communicate with their clinicians and access to the information they need to take a more active role in the management of their health and wellness.
Third Place: $10,000
Health PEI – Computerized Provider Order Entry (CPOE) system
The Health PEI CPOE system allows physicians’/clinicians’ orders to be entered electronically rather than written by hand, which reduces potential errors, improves patient care and safety and delivers more efficient health care.
What is a Demonstration Project?
Demonstration projects are smaller digital health initiatives, which Infoway supports through the Consumer Health Solutions and Innovation investment programs. The demonstration projects trial the use of digital health solutions, measure their value and encourage the growth of effective solutions.
