How does digital health support patients/caregivers to become more active participants in their health care?

Being informed as to what digital information is available allows the patient/caregiver to encourage the sharing of available health information between their care providers, especially in our rural setting where specialist are not located in our area. It is important to promote the sharing of available digital information to prevent unnecessary repeating of investigations or/and for the comparisons repeated investigations from other care providers at the same or other facilities.

Share an experience where digital health had an impact, or could have had an impact, on you as a patient, caregiver or family member.

My father had a radiology investigation at a rural hospital back in 2002 using the Provincial Picture (Image) achieving system. Being that my father was a stroke survivor, I was present at the investigation. I inquired if the specialist at our city hospital would have access to the images and was assured that the specialist would. At the specialist appointment 100k from home, I was told that the images weren’t available. I made a call to our rural hospital and the images were made available.

The theme of the 2016 Infoway Partnership Conference is “A Conversation About Digital Health”. How do you believe you can contribute to the conversation?

I would listen to the conversation and then draw on my bank of stories from the rollout of our provincial SHARE/DIS portal access to physicians, clinician, and support staff. I am known to be passionate about my role on the team. I often return to work after receiving calls from coworkers when they are aware the a physician that has available time when it is known that physician is interest in obtaining access/training.

How will you apply and share what you learn from Digital Health Week and the 2016 Infoway Partnership Conference?

I will share the information when I attend our User Applications Group meeting, my SHARE/DIS Adoption Team Meeting, my Interprofessional & Development meetings, during our long runs with my running group, and if permitted with my friends using Facebook. I would listen for tips from the group on how to share the information learned at the conference.
