The Guysborough Antigonish Strait Health Authority (GASHA) works to improve the lives of individuals and communities through the promotion of healthy living. This includes ensuring that their community provides a supportive environment for breastfeeding which their social media initiative sought to promote.
Through the use of social media, GASHA aimed to normalize breastfeeding by increasing exposure to breastfeeding within the communities, letting breastfeeding mothers in the GASHA district know that they are supported, and reminding the general public that breastfeeding is a normal and natural way to feed infants and toddlers. In addition to their online efforts, GASHA also planned off-line community discussion groups spread over a vast geography in an aim to foster community engagement. For those who could not attend in person, a discussion was initiated online by following the hashtag #letstalkbf on Twitter. Tweets from these community discussions were retweeted and favourited not only locally, but around the world.
Guysborough Antigonish Strait Health Authority plans to continue their online efforts by creating videos that speak to overall promotion of health via their YouTube channel.
