Halton Region Health provides health services and programs to promote the well-being of the residents of Oakville, Burlington, Milton and Halton Hills. A few years ago, the Regional Municipality of Halton started a study with parents to determine how they prefer to receive information. As a result, HaltonParents was created to respond to the growing desire for online parenting supports.
Through the HaltonParents initiative, Halton Region offers a variety of free parenting programs aimed to help manage the transition into parenthood, support the healthy growth and development of children and teens, and help build confidence to parent children in a positive way. In addition to the HaltonParents website, Halton Region uses twitter, a blog, and most recently, Facebook to connect with their audience. Through twitter, Halton Region holds tweet chats periodically and sends live tweets from community events. The blog, established in 2010, is used to zero in on specific topics as well as provide the audience with additional sources to use and learn from.
Halton Region wanted to further connect with their audience by creating a HaltonParents Facebook page. The page targets parents with children from ages 0-12 by creating posts specifically pertaining to that age group. Within the few months of launching the new page, Halton Region saw interest in the page grow quite rapidly with a lot of audience engagement, likes and shares. In the future, Halton Region plans to launch two more Facebook pages to in an effort to focus on more niche audiences.
