How does digital health support patients/caregivers to become more active participants in their health care?

Information is vital to understanding, allowing people to feel more confident to ask questions, discuss health concerns and make decisions. Digital health will help to facilitate getting the right information into patients & caregivers hands. As we continually engage technology to manage our lives, digital health supports our efforts by providing accurate information. Digital health also helps patients & caregivers access health information no matter where they are, allowing for timely decisions.

Share an experience where digital health had an impact, or could have had an impact, on you as a patient, caregiver or family member.

When my mother moved provinces she managed to share copies of previous breast scans saved on a CD with her new doctor. Given that she had waited a few months to get an appointment, having a digital copy allowed for timely discussions without the delays of waiting for results of the official request. The timeliness of that conversation made a difference in making decisions about her physical health & the entire family’s mental well-being by reducing the stress related to waiting in uncertainty.

The theme of the 2016 Infoway Partnership Conference is “A Conversation About Digital Health”. How do you believe you can contribute to the conversation?

As a millennial who has embraced technology to manage many areas of my life, I hope to engage with digital health leaders and thinkers on some of the components that make technology helpful and user-friendly. Also, as a volunteer with Vancouver Coastal Health’s Community Engagement Advisory Network, I believe that I will be able to provide insight on some challenges that my community (and not just myself) has in actively managing their health; insight for areas that digital health may address.

How will you apply and share what you learn from Digital Health Week and the 2016 Infoway Partnership Conference?

My volunteer roles with Vancouver Coastal Health CEAN provide forums for me to share back information AND ideas with my local health authorities and my community. We conduct peer forums that have proven to be effective in disseminating information on health options to the community; forums particularly helpful considering some of the skepticism that people may have regarding technology. Finally, as a PhD student in Health, the learnings will help inform my research and further health practices.
